Mafia boss Matteo Messina Denaro arrested in Italy after 30 years

Sicilian crime boss arrested after decades on the run

Messina Denaro, the most-wanted Mafia boss in Italy, was arrested in Sicily by the Carabinieri on Monday after 30 years on the run.

Messina Denaro, who is 60 years old, is considered to be the last of the "Corleonesi" clan, which was responsible for a series of bombings in Italy in the 1990s. He has been convicted of multiple murders, including the assassination of anti-Mafia prosecutors Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino.

Messina Denaro was arrested at a private clinic in Palermo, where he was being treated for cancer. He was unarmed and did not resist arrest. The arrest was the result of a joint operation by the Carabinieri and the Italian police.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni hailed the arrest as a "great victory for the state". She said that it was a "moment of joy for the victims of the Mafia, for their families and for all those who have fought against the Mafia".

The arrest of Messina Denaro is a major blow to the Mafia. It is a sign that the Italian state is committed to fighting organized crime and that it is possible to bring even the most powerful criminals to justice.
